Developing Interpretive Mode of Comm w/ Authentic Resources

World language teachers are tasked with equipping students with all the tools they need to access a wealth of language experiences. The Interpretive Mode, one of the three modes of communication, involves the viewing, listening or reading of authentic documents - documents that are created by native speakers for other native speakers.

2015 ACTFL Teacher of the Year, Nicole Naditz, explains the theory and explores the practice of this inextricable link between authentic texts and developing interpretive mode through concrete classroom examples that you can quickly begin using in your classroom.

Nicole has taught French to grades 3 through 12, including AP French Language and Culture since 1993, and brings a wealth of practical knowledge right to your classroom. Whether you are viewing individually or in a group, the discussion guides for each module will keep the conversation going with the intention of empowering world language teachers of all languages.

Once you complete the webinar, you will be able to:

  1. Explain the hallmarks of student proficiency in the Interpretive Mode for Novice and Intermediate users of the language.
  2. Give some specific examples of tasks Novice and Intermediate language can do using authentic documents in the Interpretive Mode.
  3. Select appropriate authentic documents for my learners.
  4. Design appropriate interpretive tasks and assessments using those documents.
